Who Are We

David Hofmann

Dave’s research and consulting activities focus on organizational climate, leadership, organizational change, organizational design, and decision making. He teaches courses in organizational behavior, leadership, and the complexities of middle management.

 

Dave has consulted, conducted applied research projects or led executive development workshops with the following organizations: A.E. Staley Manufacturing Corporation, Aker Gulf Marine, Behavioral Science Technologies, Carrier Corporation/United Technologies, Cisco, Citibank, Dentsply, Duke Energy,  ExxonMobil, Hess Corporation, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Marathon Oil, National Multi Housing Association, Schneider Electric, Sony-Ericsson, Textron, the United States Air Force, the United States Army, the United States Marine Corp, the United States Postal Service, University of North Carolina Hospital System, Veterans Administration and WakeMed Hospital System. Internationally, he has presented executive education or research seminars in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the UAE.

 

One specific focus of Dave’s research is on how leadership and organizational culture impact safety and errors within organizations operating in high risk environments. In 2006, he was awarded the American Psychological Association’s Decade of Behavior Research Award recognizing the applied implications of this work. He also has been the recipient of a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award (University of Giessen, Germany). In 2010-2011 he served on the National Research Council / National Academy of Engineering committee investigating the BP Deepwater Horizon accident, and he is currently serving on a second National Academies of Science committee focused on safety culture in the offshore industry.   

 

Dave is currently the Hugh L. McColl Distinguished Professor and Area Chair for the Organizational Behavior faculty group at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. He earned his PhD in industrial and organizational psychology from Pennsylvania State University, a master's degree in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor's degree in business administration from Furman University.

Mark McNeilly

Mark has served as a global marketing executive and has several years of experience with both IBM and Lenovo in the IT industry. His business background includes branding, strategy, marketing, market intelligence, management, manufacturing and personnel.

 

Mark is the author of a popular strategy book based on Sun Tzu’s Art of War, titled Sun Tzu and the Art of Business: Six Strategic Principles for Managers as well as George Washington and the Art of Business: Leadership Principles of America’s First Commander-in-Chief, (both from Oxford University Press). He has presented his views on strategy and marketing to corporations, business people in the U.S. Europe and Asia as well as the U.S. Air Force Command and Staff College. He has discussed his ideas on strategy on the BBC, C-SPAN, CNBC’s TV Show Power Lunch and other TV and radio programs. Mark appeared as a guest speaker on the History Channel Special on Sun Tzu’s Art of War. He has also been an expert blogger for Fast Company magazine.

 

Beyond these activities, Mark also is a Professor of the Practice at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He teaches marketing and organizational behavior courses at the MBA level. He also serves as a faculty advisor for the STAR program and executive coach in the Leadership program. He received his MBA with honors from the University of Minnesota and his BS in finance from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

David Roberts

Dave Roberts has spent more than 25 years helping organizations improve their performance in sales, sales consulting and sales management. He spent 16 years with specialist sales consulting companies (managing partner with The Sales Consultancy; vice president at OnTarget; senior director in The TAS Group), including six years as a vice president of the sales effectiveness business unit in Siebel Systems Inc.

 

Dave has worked with leading organizations in Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America to help his clients optimize their sales effectiveness and achieve business results. His clients include Avaya, EDS, IBM, Microsoft, Nortel, Sun Microsystems and United Health Group.

 

He worked at Hewlett-Packard, Ltd. for 11 years as a sales professional and later as the global account manager for one of HP's largest accounts. He created a sales and sales management development curriculum for senior sales, support and management staff for the company.

 

Currently, Dave is a Professor of the Practice at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. He is a native of the United Kingdom and is an enthusiastic pilot and holds a U.S. commercial license. Dave received his degree in electronic engineering from the University of Hull.
